Mini Suider-Paarl Wine-Cheese-Olive Route Discovered!

Given very wet, weather on Saturday, we decided that rain in the wine lands must be better than rain in Cape Town, so we left early for our lunch engagement at Fairview. The intention was too meander our way through to Fairview and hopefully discover some gems en-route … we were not disappointed by the bounty of the Cape.

First stop was the House of Olives, a most unassuming olive and olive oil producer (they don’t even have a website), just off the R101 (sort of between Simonsvlei and the Sante Winelands Hotel). They sell pure, top quality olive oil, far better than any of the imported stuff on South African shelves, at just R43/l! Not surprisingly, they are struggling to keep up with demand.

Next stop was Landskroon. I have enjoyed a few bottles of Landskroon before, but have never visited the estate. This is a charming farm and tasting room to visit. Although not too taken with their whites, their reds and their ports were extremely drinkable and very well priced too … nice to see!

At last it was lunch time and we made our way to Fairview’s Goatshed. A highly recommended stop on any wine route … if not a destination in itself.

So inspired by the local produce, we organised an impromptu cheese and port evening that night … Fairview brie, topped with nuts, baked in the oven and then caramelised, when down a treat with the Landskroon 2001 port. Bon appetit
