The Growth of Withington in the UK

The hype in the wine industry increases at a relentless pace and there are now more shows/awards events than months of the year. I have always maintained that the only real indicator of the success or not of a wine, is the “second-bottle”. Wine writers, retailers and price might well initiate the first purchase, but only the wine itself, the second.

I have been very pleased this year to see almost a doubling of my sales in the UK. All of these are via mail through Averys or the Daily Telegraph, and at the time of writing, if you were to visit the Avery’s website (www.averys.com) and select “red wines”, you would see that Withington Shiraz/Cabernet is placed at around number 15 out of 605 wines – in other words, in the top 4%, way above the average for the South African sector.
